Established in 2013 for financial inclusion
Arthavida Intermediary Limited was incorporated in 2013 as a limited liability company, born from the collaborative vision of Arthavida Foundation (Guarantee Limited) and Arthacharya Foundation. Both founding organizations demonstrated their commitment by purchasing shares in the newly formed entity. The company officially commenced microfinance operations on April 1st, 2014, taking over these critical functions from Arthavida Foundation Guarantee Limited. The establishment of Arthavida Intermediary Limited addresses a fundamental gap in financial services—providing assistance to the poorest citizens who cannot access formal financial institutions. Founded under the vision of Mr. Sathis De Mel, the organization was created specifically to bridge this critical divide and bring financial services to those who need them most.

Decades of dedication to poverty alleviation
The journey began in 1992 when Mr. Sathis De Mel founded Arthacharya Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving lives below the poverty line. Through various development projects, the foundation worked tirelessly to uplift struggling families. Initially funded through international donor agencies from the Netherlands, this early work laid the groundwork for sustainable, long-term community development.
However, sole dependence on donor funding proved to be unsustainable. As a result, AIL was established in 2013 as a separate legal entity. While ensuring a reasonable profit for its own sustainability, the organization's core objective remains the upliftment of its beneficiaries' living standards.
A Unique Model of Poverty Alleviation
At Arthavida, there are no family members in the company hierarchy, and the modest profits generated from our operations are not distributed among the Directors or senior management. Instead, the profits are reinvested in poverty alleviation initiatives, including the operation of Community Colleges run by our parent organization, Arthacharya Foundation.
Through this unique approach, Arthavida has demonstrated a distinct and impactful model of poverty alleviation compared to other microfinance institutions operating in Sri Lanka. We firmly believe that one of the most effective tools to empower less fortunate individuals is technical training, which enables them to find sustainable livelihoods.
